I saw this week that a few truly misguided students at UT-San Antonio are offering to give out porn in exchange for Bibles on campus. Their "reasoning" is that they are trading "smut for smut" (their words).
No surprise that they're members of the atheist organization on what is loosely labeled an institution of higher learning. Why would I say that? Because the school administration officials state that the students are within their rights of free expression and right of assembly in what they're doing. Makes you wonder what else the administration thinks is appropriate for learning environments, doesn't it? Bet their enrollment spikes (down!).
Personally, I think the absence of wisdom here is obvious to anyone. These students are in no way furthering their cause by attacking another. One radio caller I heard referred to them as "anti-theists" because of their attempt to attack another faith, rather than exercising their preference to have no faith.
It does make you pause for a moment and consider how our world today continues to operate in a climate of change and to do so differently than generations before it. I sincerely doubt my parents would ever have seen this kind of activity on their campus, heard about it on TV or read about it in the newspaper. Yet, there it is and hear about them we do.
The internet makes it possible for anyone to find and participate in their "group". Almost anyone can find almost anything wherever it might be and connect as part of a group - never alone in their characteristics. The smut-peddlers can find their friends and group up.
So, "smut for smut" makes news and the views are out in front for you and I to agree on or disagree with, etc. Wow. Yet, wait a minute - Wow! If something that idiotic can be noticed, what about something good?
What can we do? Make sure we recognize how many people there are who are turned off by "Bibles for porn" lunacy and are seeking answers, as well as a place they can call home. They'll read that article and ask, "what do you think?", then "read" in your answer whether you know and practice a better and more fulfilling way. Atheism may be growing a bit louder these days, but God's people are growing more numerous all over the world. Why not make this a reason to offer a more wisely reasoned way? The Way Himself.
Also, we can get excited that we can communicate with many people who are looking for a group like ours. Why not consider using your social networking page as a way to make sure your faith and church is where others can see it? You may be surprised who wants to "group up"!
As I ask myself, "what would I trade my Bible for?" and know it won't be for what I've discussed in part above, I'm hoping it's to bring light and life to my world in every way. I want it to be for what the Bible teaches me to do and become as I follow Christ. Trade it? I think it's available to anyone who can benefit from it . In fact, I'll give it away!
