What I'm Reading

You may be wondering where I am in the "read the Bible Thru" process we started in January.  Here's a bit of where I am and what I'm thinking:

Numbers 9-11 - No surprise the people get tired of manna.  Every day?  Every meal?  So, God gives them meat - too much.  Maybe this is where the phrases, "what have you done for me lately?" and "too much of a good thing" came up.  No wonder Moses wonders audibly, "Why did you give me these people?"

Trading the Bible For WHAT?!

I saw this week that a few truly misguided students at UT-San Antonio are offering to give out porn in exchange for Bibles on campus.  Their "reasoning" is that they are trading "smut for smut" (their words).

Football Recruits and God

Every year at this time I enjoy watching the process of high school footballers signing their letters of intent to play at colleges all over the country.  I've enjoyed it since I was a boy, watching from the stands with my Dad on Friday nights as my heroes 10 years older blocked and tackled and ran.  He and I would follow these "big boys" as they signed their names and then took a step up in stages.

The First Thing Reading the Bible Teaches You to See (first month reflection)

As you close the first month of reading the Bible through this year, I hope you've noticed something truly fascinating and thrilling about reading it.  You especially notice this as you read multiple passages as we're doing.  It's one of the most convincing proofs that the Bible is written by God, not merely men and women trying to compose a book of good thoughts.

Resting and still not missing a thing

Studying the Ten Commandments always brings a fresh understanding to my current ways of living.  It strongly reminds me that God's ways are best and are not only good for me, they are the ways I prefer when I do as He says.

God and Haiti

Pat Robertson brought a lot of response when he stated he believed the recent earthquake and 70,000 deaths on Haiti were the result of God's judgement for entering into a "pact with the devil" in the 1700's.  Is that what Christians should believe?  I don't think so, Pat.

The easy answers to other people's problems are rarely the Godly ones.  There are and have always been a lot of God's people in Haiti.  Judging the character of all when few are known isn't God's way (and shouldn't be ours). (see Matthew 7:12 for a guide)

You Don't Get a Pass

I think one of the greatest misconceptions of following Jesus is the idea that if you do, everything you've ever wanted will come just as you want it to each day.

Hmmm...I don't believe that's what is promised (read Jesus' life)...but it is what we want, so...why doesn't it happen that way?  Doesn't God want us to be happy?

Why Looking At The Stars Is Inspiring

Today's reading includes a passage from Matthew 5:13-20 where Jesus encourages us that His reason for coming is to fulfill what God has said and inspire us toward the future.  I love the way The Message translates one verse, "Long after stars burn out and earth wears out, God's law will be alive and working."

Yes.  That's what I believe and is why I think the best course is following His word without regard to the ways of others.

Angels Doing More Than Watchin'

From today's reading of Matthew 4:18-25, Acts 5:17-42, Genesis 24 and Psalm 9 it seems clear that Jesus' call to live by kingdom principles, assuming God can do as He says in His promised ways, results in the provision of the Lord to accomplish His will.

Me and My Shadow

Acts 5:15 - Peter's shadow is enough to bring people into His presence.  What is my influence?

Psalm 8:4 - It is amazing that God is "mindful" of me (and you) - even though I can't think of a "worthy reason", He is (and will be!).

Genesis 23:6 - Abraham's life leads those around him to respect his wishes, even those who are not believers - what will be my influence when I need it the most?

Hearing while reading, 1/11

Ps. 7 - God prepares us as He did David - I'm hoping my spiritual disciplines work alongside my daily experiences to translate all for His glory - physical and sptitual. (as they did with Jesus (MT 4)

Monday Toesday

Had a reminder this morning how "out of style" I am.  (No surprise to you, I'm sure.)

As I drove to work in 23 degree weather, I passed a young guy on the sidewalk in flip-flops!  Not homeless, just his choice for today - WoW!

Man, that's suffering for your art!

God made our toes, but I think He wants us to consider taking dominion over them!

How to Begin Again - Again

"How do you read the Bible regularly without it becoming stale?  I like good books, but...."

I enjoy beginning again with God every year and usually have new things to set out to accomplish as goals over time.  I'm just one of "those people".  My spiritual and physical lives tend to track with one another.

Read the Bible Together schedule

The schedule for Reading the Bible Through Together will be up asap on this site.  Until then you can check this blog for the schedule.

Worship text for this week of Sunday, January 10 is Exodus 20:3 - the first commandment.  The Proverbs chapter is chapter 5 - verse 21 is my favorite.

Plan I - one chapter a day - through the New Testament - is Mark 5.

Plan II - through the entire Bible this year - asks that you read Psalm 3, Genesis 5-6, Matthew 2:1-12, and Acts 2:1-21.

Hope you're tracking - we'll have the web site window\link up soon!

The company of Justus and Matthias

As I begin a new Bible Reading plan with you this year (today's readings are Genesis 3-4, Psalm 2, Matthew 1:18-25, and Acts 1:12-26), I had a couple of thoughts that parallel our ministry plan this year.

New Schedules and New Resolves

I'm looking forward to this Sunday and the new schedule that will give us a chance to provide room to grow in the months ahead, as well as have everyone on campus at the same time each week.  I'm sure we'll be "tweaking" it in the weeks ahead as we adjust to the best for everyone involved, so be sure to give us helpful feedback as we try to put people before programs and plans.  (Notice I said helpful!)

This Should Be A Unique Christmas!

This should be a unique Christmas, all right!

I'll be helping to officiate at a funeral on Christmas Eve morning in our worship center, then two Christmas Eve Candlelight and Communion services that evening.  Christmas morning should follow, with its sharing of gifts and excitement.  I can't remember having such an array of experiences in a 24-hour period.  It will definitely be different.

This Sunday - When does a Baylor grad feel like an aggie?

I have to confess that I feel like an aggie I heard about who stood behind his wife's car to tell her whether her turn signal was working or not.  "Yes, it is.  No, it's not.

Love Covers (2)

Great response so far to our offer to give a blanket to someone in need through the ministry of our local "Mission on 494".  Close to 100 blankets have come in after only two days and we're anticipating more.  This is a good way to reach out together during this season of the year.

Imagine Christmas!

What an exceptional experience I had this weekend through our Worship ministry!  The entire performances (2 of them) of the music and message were just what I believe are most useful to the Lord during this season of the year.  Our entire sanctuary became a special place for families and children of all ages to see clearly the story of God's love.

Love Covers

Christmas is such a gracious season!  We realize all over again how wonderful it is to be loved in the way we are by God.  It is clear to us in the story of His birth and (as John says in 1 John 4:11) if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.  The only question is, "How?"

This season we're encouraging you to respond to the needs of others through the ministry of "The Mission (on 494)" in an expression we're calling "Love Covers".

Somewhere Between Good and Merry

Somewhere between Happy and Merry is where we find ourselves this week - between Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas, that is!  It's a good place to be, but one that can feel like "limbo" at times.

We enjyed Thanksgiving and shared it with many others - the church services and seasons of service alone were worth doing!  We're also excited about Christmas and look forward to celebrating and singing the songs of Christ Jesus all month long.

Don't Miss the Best

Thanksgiving Sunday is always the best of the year.  Everybody comes together (our "family") and considers all we have to be thankful for in the past year.  This year, when we expected so much difficulty as the economy recessed, we have been so blessed.

I'll enjoy "counting the blessings" with you Sunday.  It's always fun to praise the Lord for what He's allowed us to enjoy together.

Getting Thanksgiving

I'd like to say that giving thanks comes naturally for me, but I think the natural response for me has been to enjoy the "getting" a little too much.  I doubt that surprises you, unless you think ministers are born with clerical collars.  I'm a little too selfish if left to myself.  That's why this time of year is so important to me.  It's a learned behavior and an acquired taste, but a preferred result, to say the least.

What Are We Doing?

Thanksgiving Season is certainly becoming more and more a Christian observance as the media around us serves "what pays" and what people buy.  It's not hard to understand why local merchants who provide most of the advertising dollars go straight from Halloween into Christmas.  The decision is driven by economics.  No thanks for that, but I don't plan on letting their decisions take my joy - there's so much fun to be shared!
